Judge orders release of perpetrator’s criminal records in Burke County Schools case

In our ongoing case against Burke County Schools, Leto Copeley represents a survivor of child sex abuse who says that the school system was negligent in continuing to employ former teacher Michael Alexander. In a separate criminal case, Alexander pled guilty to sex offenses against multiple children, and is currently in prison.

Last month, the firm, along with lawyer for other victims of Alexander, obtained a court order permitting them access to the District Attorney’s files relating to the criminal prosecution of Alexander. The superior court judge’s order keeps the identities of Alexander’s other victims confidential, but will permit the plaintiffs to find out whether the Burke County Sheriff’s investigation contains information relevant to their claim that the Board of Education should have known from Alexander’s conduct at school that he was a danger to children. Alexander took thousands of photographs and videos of children he met through his job as a classroom teacher.

You can read the court’s order here.
